Our Ohio & West Virginia Trip
In July 2013, three generations of Ingels (Jerry Ingels, Mark Ingels & Frank Ingels) met up in Atlanta, GA and flew into Columbus, Ohio for an extended weekend of ancestry and genealogy research. We drove from Columbus to Gallipolis Ohio where we stayed.
Our first day started at Mound Hill Cemetery in Gallipolis where we located and photographed several Ingels family members, as well as extended family. These photos have been added to the individual biography pages on this site and on Find-A-Grave too. After Mound Hill, we headed to the Bethel Church Cemetery in rural Gallia County, Ohio. Again, we photographed several Ingels and extended family members.
The following day we made our road trip to Monte Vista Park Cemetery, Bluefield, West Virginia. We were able to locate Ingels, Berton Theodore (1884-1953) and his wife Price (Ingels), Belva Lillian (1892-1975).
Our final day in Ohio was the most challenging. We were looking for the Crooks Cemetery that is unlisted in Find-A-Grave. Research by my father showed that the cemetery was in or around Syracuse in Meigs County Ohio. The weather was against us and we followed several leads that took us into rural back roads and farmland along the river, but we were unable to locate anything but dirt roads and wet cows.
After about an hour of searching, we stopped at the Syracuse Police and Fire department and a gentleman there escorted us to where he believed the cemetery was located. There was a road sign labeled Crook Cemetery but no markers, no fences, nothing. Frank and Jerry explored a small valley in the rain, while I searched the top of the hill and tried to avoid the mud. After 15 minutes of searching we found nothing but a deer and more rain. Luckily, a nearby neighbor saw us stomping around on private property and decided to come assist. He pointed us to the abandoned and overgrown remains of the Crooks Cemetery. The details and contents of the cemetery are here: Crooks Cemetery.
After the successful documenting of the Crooks Cemetery, we headed straight to the Columbus airport for our flights back home. After several delayed flights and a brief closing of the Atlanta airport due to weather, we made it back to Kansas City & Florida safely.
