REFLECTIONS
We would like to thank Aleda and Auntie Julie for sharing their stories of Bill and Chellah
Ok, here goes with what I know about Chellah, which unfortunately is very little. As far as I know I never met Chellah. I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia Canada and Uncle Bill lived in California, so I only remember meeting him maybe two or three times. He was a bit of a mystery to me.
Recently, I have been in touch with my Auntie Julie, who was Bill's youngest and only surviving sibling. She is now 84 years old and together we are trying to piece together our family history. All I have to go on are the stories she tells me about family members and then I research them on the internet. I have found a lot of information that I never would have found if it hadn't been for Auntie Julie.
So this is what I know about Bill and Chellah from stories I have heard. Bill and Chellah met in Vancouver sometime in the 1940's. Chellah was from a very well to do family and Auntie Julie thinks she was somehow related to Elijah Otis who invented Otis elevators (hence her middle name of Otisa). I have no idea if this is true or not. Bill and Chellah got married in Seattle, Washington on June 27, 1947 and resided in Vancouver, British Columbia. I have attached the record of their marriage and the newspaper article announcing their engagement and also their wedding. Chellah was 15 years older than Bill. After they got married Chellah bought Bill a boat. I have attached pictures of the boat.
I am not sure how long they were actually married but apparently, Bill went on a trip to the U.S. on his boat without Chellah and while he was gone he had an affair with another woman. When he returned home, he left Chellah for this other woman and they subsequently divorced. Incidentally, Chellah took the boat back. Bill married this other woman, I believe her name was Hazel Morton, but I have been unable to find a record of their marriage or subsequent divorce. Apparently, Hazel left Bill for another man. I'm not sure when Bill moved to California but in 1963 he married again to a woman named Mary Dutra., Mary was also 15 years older then Bill. Mary passed away in 1964, one year after they got married. I remember my grandmother telling me when Mary died that she hugged Bill and said "Don't worry son, you're still a young man, you'll find another wife" and he replied "No Mother, I couldn't bear to lose another one".
Chellah never remarried. I'm not sure when it happened (sometime in the 1960's) Chellah had a stroke. This stroke left her paralized and unable to speak and she had to be put into a nursing home. She had a lawyer looking after her financial affairs and rumor has it that the lawyer ran off with all of Chellah's money and left her destitute. She had to be put into a government run institution as she had no means of financial support.
In July of 1968, Bill came from California to Vancouver to visit his family(his mother, brother, and two sisters). While he was there he went to visit Chellah. Apparently, he was very upset to find that she had ended up in such a place. He told his family that she deserved better and he would see to it that she was taken care of.
Bill returned to California and on August 7, 1968, he committed suicide. Bill had changed his last name from Zikman to Mann.
Chellah passed away on March 4, 1970 at the age of 75. When I found Chellah's death registration (also attached) it turns out that she died in Delta Private Hospital, Delta, British Columbia and not the government institution where Bill visited her. According to the death registration, she had been there since January, 1969.
I do not know where the money came from to keep her in the private hospital, but I would like to think that Uncle Bill provided for her in his will.
I find this a very sad story and for some reason I feel very close to Chellah. From the stories I have heard, she was a wonderful lady. Auntie Julie did visit her a few times after her stroke and said she was always smiling.
I wasn't sure how much detail to give you or how much you want. I just thought I would tell you everything I know and you can take it from there. Please understand I am only relaying to you the stories I have been told. I cannot verify anything except the record of her marriage and the record of Chellah's death.
