Clarence left Ottumwa at 16 and joined the Army. He was assigned to a Cavalry unit, worked extensively with horses, and training both horses and riders. During WWII he was with Patton in Europe. He left the Army after 18 years, and came home to marry Helen Cratsenberg (11 Mar 1918 - 6 Jan 2011) of LaHarpe, IL. Helen is the daughter of John Harvey and Kathryn Schroeder Cratsenberg. They were married in 1946 and lived in LaHarpe until 2006 when they both went into a nursing facility located in Stronghurst, IL. Clarene and Helen have 5 children - Gary, Don, Melody, Randy, and Paul. All were born in LaHarpe.
